A Midland resident was recently honored at the Toastmasters International Convention in the Bahamas.


Odessa Police Department to participate in "No Refusal Weekend" during Labor Day holiday

The Odessa Police Department (OPD) will work with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the Ector County Independent School District (ECISD) Police Department, the University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) Police Department, Medical Center Hospital's (MCH) KEY Program, and the Ector County District Attorney's (DA) Office to enforce a "no refusal" Labor Day weekend for Sept. 1-3, the city of Odessa’s Facebook page says.

Midland Mayor Lori Blong is mourning the death of Elizabeth G. Ramirez, 23, who was fatally struck by a vehicle while crossing the street after midnight on Aug. 18, and has extended condolences to her family, the mayor said in an Aug. 28 Facebook post.

According to an Aug. 25 press release issued by Midland College (MC), nearly a decade ago, the lifelong Midland resident left the Permian Basin for the Coastal Bend some 470 to the southeast to pursue a degree in theater arts at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) only to return home upon the realization the environment wasn’t for her.


Kermit Independent School District superintendent named finalist for state award

On Aug. 28, the Kermit Independent School District (KISD) announced that the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) has named Dr. Joe Lopez a finalist for its 2023 Superintendent of the Year award. Lopez and the other four finalists will now advance to the next stage of the competition and the Superintendent of the Year will be announced Sept. 29.


City of Odessa officials on fourth annual commemoration of shootings: 'Numerous events are scheduled this week'

The city of Odessa has begun its commemorations of the fourth anniversary of the fatal Aug. 31, 2019, shootings that claimed the lives of eight people and injured 28. Per the city’s Facebook page, flags bearing the words “ODESSA STRONG” and a victim’s name were erected at Memorial Gardens Park on Aug. 29 and will remain there through a little after the Labor Day holiday.
