Former Midland Mayor Carroll Thomas passed away over the weekend at the age of 81, as confirmed by his family.
Thomas had a long history of public service in Midland, Texas. He was a member of the City of Midland’s Planning and Zoning Commission and served as its chairman in 1975. In the same year, he was elected to the Midland City Council and later served as mayor pro-tem from 1978 to 1979.
In 1986, Thomas became the city’s 24th mayor since its founding in 1907. His tenure lasted until 1992. During his time as mayor, several significant projects were undertaken including the construction of a new central fire station, adding two floors to City Hall, acquiring a new police headquarters, and initiating research and design for a new air terminal building.
Thomas graduated from Midland High in 1956 and from Texas Tech in 1961. He worked professionally as an exploration and production geologist.
A service will be held at Stonegate Fellowship on March 29 at 2 p.m.
The City of Midland expressed condolences to Thomas’ wife Georgia, their two children, and other family members.
