Texas currently ranks as the fifth state with the cheapest gas price nationwide, averaging at $3.44, a recent MRT report states.
In Midland, the average fuel price decreased by one penny to $3.45, while the overall state average dropped by 5 cents to $3.44. The average price last year in Midland was $3.53. The average across the state was $3.42.
The averages are measured not long after a decrease in gas prices across 24 out of 27 Texas metro areas surveyed by AAA.
Other states offering the cheapest fuel prices in the country include Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina and Alabama.
“The downward trajectory in gas prices can be attributed in part to the recent dip in the price of crude oil, the primary component in gasoline production,” AAA reported Thursday. “Specifically, West Texas Intermediate crude has experienced a decline of approximately $3 per barrel in comparison to the preceding week. Should this trend persist, it could spell favorable news for individuals embarking on road trips during the upcoming Labor Day weekend.”
According to the AAA Texas report, gas prices in San Angelo are at a gas average of $3.30 in San Angelo, $3.40 in Abilene, $3.40 in Amarillo, $3.41 in Odessa, $3.44 in Lubbock and $3.95 in El Paso.
El Paso continues housing the most expensive gas price averages across the state, while San Antonio stores the cheapest, as well as San Angelo, the fourth cheapest, and McAllen-Edinburg-Mission at $3.28.
“The ongoing hurricane season remains a significant variable that could potentially disrupt the current trajectory of gas price averages,” AAA reported. “If tropical storms were to impact oil and gas operations along the Gulf Coast, a brief but notable spike in pump prices could occur.”
