Midland College is advancing its commitment to healthcare education through the Primary Care Pathway Program (PCPP). The program allows students to complete medical school in seven years, a year less than the traditional timeline. This initiative aims to prepare future healthcare professionals and strengthen the workforce in the Permian Basin.

The PCPP streamlines the path to becoming a physician by reducing both time and cost of medical education. Students engage in a rigorous pre-med curriculum, including two summer internships, while receiving dedicated academic advising and support. Those who meet all program requirements may be granted an interview with the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine for early acceptance into medical school.

"Health care is a team effort, and understanding the interdisciplinary nature of patient care is crucial for student success," stated Joey Schenkman, MC Associate Professor of Biology & PCPP Director. Recently, PCPP students learned ultrasound techniques from Midland College’s Sonography program faculty. This hands-on training provided insight into diagnostic imaging's role in early detection, diagnosis, and treatment planning. Gratitude was extended to Lupita Copeland, Krista Geesaman, Laurie Fitzgerald, and Melody Riley for their guidance.

In addition to imaging techniques, students completed CPR and AED training led by Mr. Anthony Soliz, Chair of Kinesiology. This training emphasized quick decision-making and emergency response skills essential in healthcare settings.

Midland College integrates technical skills with interdisciplinary collaboration and hands-on experiences through programs like PCPP. These efforts ensure graduates are well-trained professionals ready to work across disciplines for optimal patient care.

Joey Schenkman expressed pride in shaping future healthcare professionals who are "highly skilled, collaborative, and ready to serve our communities."

For those interested in joining the PCPP at Midland College, students must submit an Intent to Apply form via email before their first semester as undergraduates. Participation suitability will be determined by the Midland College PCPP Advisory Committee.
