Midland College has introduced a Veterans Book Club, an eight-week program aimed at veterans, their families, and supporters. The meetings will be held weekly on Thursdays from 5-7 p.m. at the Scharbauer Student Center Club Room, starting January 30 and concluding on March 20.

The book club is led by Dr. Bruce Oliver Newsome, an expert in security and military history. It will cover topics such as military service, war, PTSD, injury, rehabilitation, and transitioning to civilian life. Participants are encouraged to share their experiences through discussions based on weekly readings.

“The Veterans Book Club is an opportunity for our Veterans to come together in a supportive environment to share their stories and engage with literature that reflects their unique experiences,” said Daniel Ortega, MC’s Director of Veteran Services. “This program underscores Midland College’s commitment to serving those who have served our country.”

The program is free, with books provided through federal funding. The first reading assignment is "The White Donkey," a graphic novel about military life complexities.

Dr. Newsome's expertise includes works like "Sir Basil Liddell Hart: Life, Thought, Legacy" and "Security and Risk Management." More information can be found at www.brucenewsome.com.

This initiative is not a traditional class but an open forum for dialogue relevant to the military community. It offers a chance to build camaraderie while exploring meaningful stories.
