Midland College has launched new initiatives to support first-generation college students, aiming to align its strategic plan with the needs of West Texas. The First Generation Student Success Initiatives are designed to help a diverse group of students, including non-traditional and first-time college attendees, by offering specialized advising, a student organization, and a scholarship program where students serve as First-Generation Ambassadors.
The initiatives focus on providing distinct experiences for first-generation students while emphasizing access and collaboration. Alicia Zamora*, a first-generation student at Midland College, expressed her struggles with understanding higher education systems due to lack of parental guidance. To address such challenges, the Student Services team collaborates with the First-Gen Success staff to provide tailored guidance in course selection and navigating college policies.
Feedback from fall 2024 led to the creation of a new campus organization focused on community building among first-generation students. Led by Lazaro Diaz, Career & Transfer Advisor, this club has seen encouraging engagement with over 60 interested students.
Leslie Romero, an early high school graduate and Ambassador in the First-Gen Club, noted that participating in the club helps her feel less isolated. "Meeting others with similar challenges and hearing their stories has been inspiring," she said.
The Ambassador program also offers leadership mentoring alongside scholarships for motivated first-gen students. They recently organized a successful event for National First-Generation College Celebration Day featuring food and games.
Alicia credits her positive college experience largely to the Ambassador program: "Getting to know my first-gen advisors has helped me feel more at ease when asking questions," she shared.
Midland College faculty and staff recognize the resilience of first-generation students through an informal mentorship program where they can serve as 'First Gen Champions.' This initiative aims to connect current students with mentors who share similar backgrounds.
Overall, Midland College's efforts are directed towards creating lasting impacts through comprehensive support systems for first-gen students as they pursue their educational goals.
