The Midland Independent School District (MISD) has begun the 2023-24 school year with nearly all of its teaching positions filled across the district, according to a press release.

"We will begin the new school year Wednesday with 95% of teaching positions filled across the district,” Brandon Reyes, chief of human capital, said.

The district has invested in resources, training and support of educators to improve the general learning conditions of the city.

"We're incredibly pleased with the results of our teacher recruitment efforts," Reyes said. “It's a pivotal accomplishment that underscores our commitment to ensuring every student benefits from quality instruction."

The school year began last week on Aug. 9. The additions will help fulfill the academic needs of students and aid with the increase of students this year. The sum of students increased by 226, a recent Midland Reporter-Telegram report stated.

“We projected opening day enrollment to be 28,125 students, and we opened our doors today with an enrollment of 25,595 students,” MISD reported.

The announcement comes a few weeks following the appointment of Sally Smith as the new principal of Scharbauer Elementary School, based in Midland, according to a recent NewsWest9 report.

Smith will contribute years of teaching experience after serving as an assistant principal at Dr. Lee Buice Elementary in ECISD and was named Elementary Assistant Principal of the Year. Smith also has prior classroom experience and has completed the aspiring principal academy.

The teacher earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology from the University of Texas and a master of education in educational administration.
