Midland High School running back Elijah McCoy leads the list of area athletes on the Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 6A all-state football team.
McCoy was named to the second team, while six other players received honorable mention. They included Bulldogs guard Jeff Garcia, center Jovanni Allen, and Legacy High School center Peyton Arthur. Also receiving honorable mentions were secondary players Cole Neatherlin from Legacy High School and Julian Williams from Midland High School. Rebels’ punter Jason Maltos was also recognized.
According to a news release, Duncanville senior quarterback Keelon Russell was named the offensive player of the year after throwing for 55 touchdowns and only four interceptions, leading the Panthers to the Division I state semifinals. Russell has signed to play football for Alabama. North Crowley senior linebacker Ja’Brelle Asberry and Humble Summer Creek senior defensive back Brandon Jones were co-defensive players of the year.
The Midland Times reported that McCoy will play football with the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He set a new season record for the Bulldogs with 2,269 yards and scored 31 touchdowns, surpassing Dave Wafford's record of 1,990 yards set in 1936.
