Texas Leadership Charter Academy (TLCA) has named Maria Ramirez, a special education paraprofessional, as Veteran Teacher of the Year. Ramirez, the longest-tenured educator at TLCA Midland, was nominated and selected by her colleagues for her dedication to students and her role in shaping the school’s culture.

According to a TLCA source, staff members regard Ramirez as the “heart of the school” and value her commitment to student success. “I am truly blessed to work at TLCA, and yes, those kiddos become my TLCA grandkids,” Ramirez said.

Former students also recognize Ramirez’s impact. "Ms. Ramirez was always there for all of us kids from grade school until the day we graduated. She attended our sports stuff and was our school's Grandma! She deserves this award," said Matthew delaPena, a 2022 graduate of TLCA Midland.

TLCA was established in 2015 and has grown to three Midland campuses serving students from Kindergarten through 12th grade. The public charter school system has expanded to five campuses, including locations in San Angelo, Midland, Abilene, Arlington, and Cedar Hill. TLCA Midland operates tuition-free, welcoming students regardless of attendance zones, according to its website.
