Nerd Academy, Odessa’s newest private school, is the first in Odessa to incorporate the local oil and gas industry into its educational offerings.
Known as the PetroSTEAM program, it aims to simplify complex oil and gas concepts, such as Drill String Design, into engaging, hands-on activities for young students. According to a press release where the announcement was made, the goal is to provide a strong foundation in literacy, math, and science while exposing children to industries that are central to the region's economy.
“We believe education should be relevant to the community it serves,” said Abel Nunez, co-founder and President of Nerd Academy. “Growing up in the Permian Basin, it’s vital for our kids to understand the industries that power our local economy. PetroSTEAM is about more than teaching STEM—it’s about showing students how their talents can shape their future right here at home.”
Nunez, who served 11 years in the U.S. Air Force as a Medical Unit Readiness Training instructor, applies his experience in breaking down complex concepts into accessible lessons. He aims to make STEM exciting and understandable for students at Nerd Academy.
According to the release, Nerd Academy also emphasizes social-emotional learning (SEL), focusing on leadership, individuality, and an anti-bullying culture. Students are given time each day to work on passion projects, fostering creativity and self-confidence.
The school provides all necessary supplies and uniforms for students, and tuition information is available on its website. For the spring semester, Nerd Academy has openings for 12 kindergarten students, with plans to grow its enrollment from 8 to 30.
Nerd Academy is seeking partnerships with local oil and gas companies to enhance its programs. Donations, sponsorships, and scholarships will help provide students with access to technology like iPads, computers, and a STEAM lab.
“We’re not just educating students—we’re investing in the future workforce of West Texas,” Nunez said. “We invite local businesses to join us in this mission by supporting our efforts to inspire and prepare the next generation of innovators, leaders, and entrepreneurs.”
The school, which opened on Oct. 1, is located inside the Odessa Family YMCA.
