The Greenwood Rangers' playoff journey concluded this week following a 41-34 defeat to the Benbrook Bobcats, a team based in Fort Worth.
Despite not securing the area championship, Greenwood's athletic department extended congratulations to all involved for a successful season. "The ultimate award is the one earned by the entire program. Both sides of the ball—starters, backups, and the JV scout team—came together as one to achieve something truly special," the department wrote on Facebook. "Congratulations to the 2024 District Champion Greenwood Rangers! This title is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and teamwork of everyone involved. We are so proud of this program and all it represents. #RangerDNA."
The department also announced that quarterback Lincoln Mardid was named MVP of 4A-2 Region I District 1. The Rangers achieved a 4-0 record in their district and went 10-2 overall. "As our quarterback, Lincoln’s dominance both on the ground and through the air made him the most dangerous player in the district. This is a well-earned honor for an incredible season," they said. Linebacker Landon Butts was recognized as district defensive MVP for "setting the tone for the defense all season long with his exceptional play and leadership."
According to the department, Lane Wilhelm was named District Newcomer of the Year, while Greenwood's coaching staff received recognition as Staff of the Year for their district achievements. Five Rangers were selected for First Team All-District defense: defensive lineman Luke Fails, linebacker Dakota Underhill, defensive back Kasen Brooks, defensive end Layne Wauson, and defensive back Nathan Tarango. On offense, running back Nathaniel Romero, wide receiver Cade Rowoldt, offensive lineman Jayden Colvert, wide receiver Dylan Payton, and offensive lineman Erick Bustamante were named to First Team All-District. Punter Dylan Payton and Reece Watzl were honored on special teams First Team All-District.
