Midland native Hunter Haynie has embraced a career in the nonprofit sector, drawing inspiration from his upbringing. His mother, Kathleen Kirwan-Haynie, is the executive director of Senior Life Midland and played a significant role in shaping his path. In 2023, Haynie joined United Way Midland as the Community Engagement Coordinator, which he described as a "natural fit."
"Midland is home, and working for United Way allows me to work with and help people in my hometown in order to make the community a better place to live, work and play," Haynie stated.
Haynie's educational journey began at Fannin Elementary School and continued through San Jacinto Junior High before graduating from Midland High School in 2017. Initially hesitant about college, he enrolled at Midland College following his mother's advice. This decision eventually led him to Texas Tech University, where he earned a degree in Public Relations & Strategic Communications Management in May 2022.
"The whole transformation to becoming a good college student didn’t just happen overnight. I had to study hard and really concentrate on my college courses," Haynie remarked.
After graduation, Haynie returned to Midland College as an admissions advisor. "As an admissions advisor, I was able to help students who were like me—those who felt like they weren’t college material," he explained.
Now with United Way Midland, Haynie's responsibilities include facilitating training for community members and managing Project Blueprint. He also advocates for local nonprofits with officials.
Beyond his professional commitments, Haynie volunteers with various organizations such as Senior Life Midland and the Boys and Girls Club. He also serves on the leadership team for the Midland College Alumni and Former Students Association.
In June, Haynie married Peyton, his high school sweetheart who teaches first grade at Greathouse Elementary School. The couple shares their home with Chance, a rescue dog.
