Two faculty members at Midland College have been honored with the Dr. Stan Jacobs Teaching Excellence Award. The awards were presented during a ceremony on April 24 at the Wagner & Brown Auditorium on the Midland College campus.
The annual Teaching Excellence Awards recognize faculty who contribute significantly to the intellectual life of the college through classroom innovation and dedication to students.
This year's recipients are Terry Gilmour, Ph.D., Professor of Government/Political Science, and Erick Gutierrez, Department Chair and Associate Professor in various technical fields. Dr. Gilmour has been a full-time government instructor at Midland College since 1997 and holds degrees from West Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University. She also directs MC’s Honors Program and advises the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Erick Gutierrez has led his students to multiple awards in Skills USA competitions and holds degrees from Midland College.
The selection process for these awards is extensive, involving nominations from faculty and staff, followed by an eligibility review by six individuals from different disciplines. Three finalists are chosen for each discipline: academic and workforce.
The winners receive a $5,000 cash honorarium funded by an endowment from Dr. Stan Jacobs, a retired professor from Midland College. Their names will be permanently displayed in the Pevehouse Administration Building alongside past winners.
Finalists for this year's award included Dr. Debbie McNeely (Psychology) and Joey Schenkman (Biology) for transfer disciplines; Brooke Foutch (Nursing), Anita Shellenberger (Office Systems Technology), along with Erick Gutierrez for workforce disciplines.
