Waystone Brewing is set to host a Dice Miner tournament on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at 2101 W. Wadley Ave., Suite 27, in Midland. The event promises an evening of strategic fun and friendly competition.

“Because board games are part of our business and a large aesthetic of the place, we wanted to have organized game nights so that our customers could get together and play against each other,” said Jaylyn Morehouse, owner of Waystone Brewing.

According to its official game site Atlas Games, Dice Miner involves a sloped mountain board filled with dice. Players take turns choosing dice from the mountain, and each time the mountain is emptied, players score based on the faces showing on their dice. A full game consists of three rounds of filling, mining, and scoring the mountain, with each player's trove growing and increasing their scoring potential over the course of the game.

“Dice Miner tournaments started last December, and we try to have a tournament once a month,” Jaylyn said. “It's a game that takes very little time to finish many rounds, so it makes an ideal tournament-style game.”

Jaylyn noted that while Dice Miner is not a widely known game, its popularity has been growing among their customers. “I think because we host it every month it's starting to take off amongst our customer base,” she said. “It's also one of the easier games to pick up quickly, and players can have casual conversations and enjoy a pint while playing.”

Ted Morehouse, co-owner and Jaylyn’s husband, typically oversees the event and explains how to play the game at the beginning of the evening for newcomers. “Players take turns choosing dice from the mountain and scoring points from the dice combinations at the end of each round. Three games are played in total, and the groups rotate so they play different people throughout the evening. We have fun prizes for 1st and 2nd place,” Jaylyn said.

Adding to the evening's ambiance, a guest guitarist will play mining-themed songs, and Blue Geo will set up a display of rocks, crystals, gems, and jewelry during the tournament.

“We hope that this tournament will lead to other board game tournaments in the future,” Jaylyn said. “We have a few games in mind that may be good ones to introduce to the community.”

Waystone Brewing invites all board game enthusiasts and curious newcomers to join in the fun and enjoy a unique blend of gaming and socializing.
