Midland College faculty and staff gathered to honor an achievement in the career of Women’s Basketball Head Coach Ron Jones – surpassing 700 career wins. In recognition of the achievement, Jones was presented with a plaque "to commemorate such a significant achievement" in his coaching career. The announcement of this achievement was made in a Facebook post by Midland College.

"I just have to say how much I enjoy Midland College, and always have," said Jones in the Facebook post. "When I got here as a student-athlete, I didn’t want to stay here because it was so ugly and flat, but now, I don’t want to leave. It’s been that way for a long time. The people grow on you at Midland College, and that’s the thing that means the most to me – more than anything else. When you enjoy coming to work every day, it doesn’t seem like work."

According to Jones, he has served as the Midland College women’s basketball coach for 30 seasons with a current record of 710-235.

“My 700th win at Midland College was on November 16th, 2023,” Jones told Midland Times. “My career collegiate record is currently 744-262, with two years at Western Texas College and 30 at Midland College. My overall career record, including 4 years at Guthrie High school 821-287, with a 77-25 record at Guthrie, including the 1990 State Championship.”

Speaking about the significance of reaching 700 wins, Jones told Midland Times, “With 700 wins, the most significant thing to me is many wonderful memories of the kids I’ve coached. Being able to stay in touch with many of them and what’s going on in their lives has been very enjoyable. Most weeks I have contact with former players in one way or another and look forward to continuing to be a part of their lives when possible.

"The experiences I’ve had during my time at Midland College help me appreciate how much my family and I have enjoyed our time and relationships we’ve developed during my coaching career,” said Jones.
