Assessment data show MISD kinder readiness tops state average | Midland ISD Facebook

Recent assessment data from the fall of 2023 reveals that Midland Independent School District (MISD) kindergarten students exhibit exceptional readiness, surpassing the state average. A noteworthy 62 percent of all MISD kindergartners were deemed "kindergarten ready," outshining the statewide average of 46 percent. The 71 percent of these prepared students participated in MISD's pre-K program during the previous school year.

In the context of Texas, being "kindergarten ready" involves the ability to "function competently in a school environment in the areas of early language and literacy, mathematics, and social skills as objectively measured by state-approved assessment instruments," according to the Texas Administrative Code.

“Great teachers and a great plan make the difference, and we’re thrilled that our pre-K program is delivering on its promise to give students a great start before they enter kindergarten," said Kim Gamboa, Director of Early Childhood.

All pre-K classes at MISD neighborhood schools are led by teachers with early childhood education certification. The program is accessible at most elementary campuses and the Pre-K Academy at Midland College.

Expanding the pre-K program is a strategic initiative for enhancing the overall student experience. Currently, MISD caters to over 1,100 pre-K students, predominantly 4-year-olds. The recent passage of the 2023 school bond positions MISD to plan for the inclusion of more 3-year-old students in the coming years.

Pre-K education at MISD is available free of charge for those who qualify, in which information of qualifications can be found at Texas Education Agency webpage. For additional details, interested individuals are encouraged to visit the MISD Early Childhood Education webpage.
