Rebel boys' swimming and diving win first district title in 50 years

The Midland Legacy boys’ swimming and diving team had a monumental victory at the District 2-6A swim and dive meets on Jan. 25, winning for the first time since 1974 and setting records along the way.

“Legacy boys won the boys' side of the meet which is the first time in the past 50 years,” said Coach Steven Flato, who coaches Midland and Midland Legacy, and was named the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches’ Boys Swimming Coach of the Meet.

The Midland Legacy boys’ team took the win with a score of 176, edging out San Angelo Central with a score of 170.

The Midland Legacy girls’ swimming and diving team was third in the meet with a score of 116. San Angelo Central was first with 209 points, followed by Midland with 119 points.

Midland Legacy boys swimming and diving:

The Rebels won the 400 yard freestyle race with a meet record setting time of 3:16.37, which beat out a 2003 record of 3:17.12. The relay team included David Sites, Gavin Rochelle, David Fuentes and George Workman.

Damion Hernandez won the one meter diving event with a time of 252.50. The freshman was named the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Diving Athlete of the Meet.

Gavin Rochelle was another winner, placing first the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 1:59.40. Stephan Sites took fourth place with a time of 2:15.41.

Also taking a win was David Fuentes in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.90. Placing second was Brendan Morgan with a time of 22.62.

Fuentes won the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 59.29. Rochelle was third with 1:02.88. Kasen Elliott was ninth with a time of 1:22.28.

Midland Legacy had the top three finishers in the 500 yard freestyle race. David Sites won with a time of 4:56.46; Stephan Sites was second with a time of 5:21.54 and Braden Harvill was third with a time of 5:29.52.

David Sites also won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 52.94. Brendan Morgan was second with a time of 54.93.

Workman won the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 54.60. Jacob Bladen had a time of 59.39 for third place. Amar Bhakta was seventh with a time of 1:10.12.

Workman placed second in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.14, as well. Elliott was 12th with a time of 2:21.63.

The 200 yard freestyle relay team took a win with a time of 1:28.06. This team included Fuentes, Sites, Rochelle and Workman.

The Rebel 200 yard medley relay team placed third with a time of 1:47.48. The team included Bladen, Stephan Sites, Morgan and Aiden Pope.

Midland Legacy girls swimming and diving

In the 500 yard freestyle, Lainey Gloden took the win with a time of 5:25.59. Lauren Chandler was second with a time of 5:36.87; Harper Diaz was fourth with a time of 5:48.38 and Jayleigh Buys was seventh with a time of 6:12.86.

Gloden was second in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.21.

In the 100 yard backstroke, Elizabeth Bitnerowska was first with a time of 1:02.35. Placing ninth was Madison Parkhurst at 1:33.39; 10th was Rebecca Benavidez at 1:34.63 and 11th was Ymani Baal with a time of 1:35.54.

The Rebels placed second in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:59.86. The team included Diaz, Madison Morris, Addison Tew and Ortiz.

In the 100 yard freestyle, Bitnerowska was second with 56.35. Madison Morris was eighth with a time of 1:02.46

Chandler was second in the 200 yard individual medley, with a time of 2:18.79. Diaz placed fourth at 2:27.73.

In the 100 yard butterfly, Ortiz placed second with a time of 1:01.63. Buys took seventh with a time of 1:12.15, and Baal was ninth with a time of 1:34.77.

Midland Legacy was third in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:45.15. The team included Bitnerowska, Chandler, Briana Ortiz and Gloden.

The girls’ 200 yard medley relay team placed also placed third with a time of 1:53.47. The team included Gloden, Chandler, Ortiz and Bitnerowska.

In the 50 yard freestyle, Addison Tew was sixth with 27.09; Madison Morris was seventh with 28.02; Presley Forbes was ninth with 28.87 and Madison Parkhurst was 12th with 31.04.
