Mustangs clinch playoff spot with 58-3 win over Southwest Christian School

Midland Christian (4-5, 2-2) rolled right over the Southwest Christian School Eagles (6-4, 1-3) on Friday night, with Colton Newsom scoring six touchdowns in a 58-3 lopsided district victory to make it back-to-back wins for the Mustangs and a playoff berth.

Senior quarterback Colten Newsom ran for a couple of long rushing touchdowns right out of the gate, one for 23 yards and another for 55 yards to go up 14-3 at the end of one quarter.

In the second quarter Newsom connected with Brylee Perez in stride for a pass that he took to the house for a 95-yard catch and run, leaving defenders in his wake. Newsom took it in for another score to make it a 28-3 lead on a two-yard QB sneak. He connected with Cadon Griffin for a 10-yard score and it was a 35-3 game with two minutes to go in the half. The points just kept coming with Perez taking it all the way on a 65-yard touchdown run with a minute left in the second quarter. Mason Horton’s extra point made it a 42-3 lead at the half. The Mustangs cruised the rest of the way to victory tacking on 16 more points, and confidence is high with the playoffs ahead of them.

Newsom was 5-for-6 for 183 yards and two touchdown passes. He also led the rushing attack with seven carries for 157 yards and four scores. 

Perez had one carry for a 68-yard touchdown, and also caught a pass that he took to the house for 95 yards. 

Keller Weathers had seven carries for 39 yards and Price Bryant ran six times for 48 yards. Grant Muniz had a two-yard touchdown run. Cadon Griffin had one catch for a 10-yard score.

It was a huge win to finish out the regular season in front of a home crowd on senior night to clinch a playoff spot. After a tough loss to Liberty Christian on Oct. 13, the Mustangs have turned it around lately with a 110-24 point advantage in the last two wins.

On Nov. 11 the No. 3 Mustangs travel to No. 2 Grace Community (9-1, 3-1) for TAPPS Division 2 playoff football action at 1 p.m. with the location to be determined.
