Lara reaches 1,000 yard milestone but Permian loses 46-44 to Frenship on late Tiger field goal

Permian (4-4, 1-2) running back Juzstyce Lara hit the 1,000 yard milestone on Friday night with a 242 yard performance, but Frenship (6-2, 1-2) spoiled the occasion with a late fourth quarter field goal to knock off the Panthers 46-44.

Frenship started off hot with a 14-0 lead after one quarter with a pair of touchdown passes from Hudson Hutcheson to Chase Campbell, with the first got 18-yards and the second for a 32-yard score. Drew Cox nailed both extra points.

In the second quarter, Permian had the ball at their own one-yard line after a great punt, but they marched 99-yards down the field for a score thanks to some strong running by Lara. Lara went off for a long run, stiff arming his way to the Frenship 40-yard line after being pinned to their own end zone. He finished the drive with a one-yard touchdown run, and an extra point made it 14-7. Hutcheson struck again on a 70-yard touchdown pass to Leyton Stone to take a 21-7 lead with Cox hitting the extra point. With less than a minute to go in the half, Permian scored on a 54-yard rushing touchdown by Isaac Herrera, and an extra point made it 21-14. Herrera took a pitch and bolted to the end zone untouched for the score.

Just before the half ended, Hutcheson connected with Landon Hutcheson for a 65-yard rushing touchdown to take a two touchdown lead. The crazy scoring continued in the final part of the half, with Panther quarterback Jakob Garcia throwing a 20-yard touchdown to Gavin Black. Lara scored on a two-point conversion and it was a 28-22 game in favor of Frenship at the half.

In the third quarter, Permian took a 29-28 lead with three-yard touchdown pass by Garcia to Isaiah Welton and an extra point with eight minutes to go. Permian forced Frenship to punt on the next possession, but it was fumbled and the Tigers took over at the Panther 28-yard line. With five minutes left in the quarter, Frenship took the lead on another touchdown pass by Hutcheson, this time for 26-yards to Leyton Stone. Cox drilled the extra point to put the Tigers up 35-29. Before the quarter ended, Permian took a 36-35 leads on a 25-yard Lara rushing touchdown followed by an extra point.

With 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Hutcheson connected with Campbell for 27-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion made it a 46-43 lead for Frenship. Permian responded with eight minutes on the clock on a 21-yard rushing touchdown by Lara, and a two point conversion put the Panthers up by one. With 2:32 on the clock, Cox was the hero for the Tigers, knocking a 32-yard field goal through the uprights. The Tigers forced Permian to turn the ball over on downs with a minute left, and secured the victory.

Permian had a total of 351 rushing yards in the game and were led by Lara, who had a pair of rushing touchdowns and 242 yards on the ground. On the season the senior running back now has 154 carries for 1,167 yards rushing.

Garcia was 8-for-12 for 79 yards and two touchdowns. Gage Murphy caught three passes for 38 yards, Black had a 20-yard touchdown catch and Welton had the one-yard touchdown catch. Permian was 8-for-13 on third downs and had a 22-19 first down advantage.  

Bryan Pry and Riley Summerford had a sack each to lead the Permian defense.

Frenship’s Hutcheson was just about unstoppable, going 24-for-30 for 425 yards and six touchdown passes. The dynamic duo of Campbell and Stone caught five of his touchdowns. Campbell caught 10 passes for 150 yards and three scores, while Stone had eight catches for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Landon Hutcheson caught six passrs for 70 yards and a touychdown. Caydin Blakely led the Tigers on defense with 15 tackles and a sack. Hudson Simpson forced a fumble and Hunter Hicks had a sack.
