Midland stays undefeated with 59-28 win over Odessa

Running back Elijah McCoy ran for 195 yards and a touchdown for Midland (8-0, 3-0) to lead the Bulldogs to a 59-28 win over District 6A rival Odessa (5-3, 2-1) to remain undefeated.

The Bronchos led 7-0 in the first quarter, but Midland quarterback Tristan Love put the Bulldogs on the board with a 34-yard rushing touchdown, and an extra point tied the game. With about three minutes left in the quarter, Odessa fumbled and Midland recovered at the Bronchos 32-yard line. Love completed a 20-yard pass to Braeden Hall for a score, and Levi Crowder hit the extra point making it a 14-7 lead. With about a minute to go in the quarter, McCoy took off for a 70-yard touchdown, and Crowder’s extra point put the Bulldogs up 21-7.

With nine minutes left in the second quarter, Anthony Kolb provided some fireworks with a 70-yard rushing touchdown, and Crowder’s kick put Midland up 28-7. The scoring onslaught continued with Stroman Bridges scoring on a 29-yard rushing touchdown with eight minutes left, and the extra point made it 35-7. At the four minute mark, Ivan Carreon hauled in a 20-yard touchdown pass by Mikey Cota. Midland responded with two minutes left in the half with a 15-touchdown by Jake Nava, and the extra point made it 42-14 at the half.

In the second half McCoy and Bridges rattled off a couple of nice runs to get Midland to the Odessa 21-yard line. With about seven minutes left in the quarter, Crowder nailed a 20-yard field goal to go up 45-14. With four minutes left in the third quarter, Cota connected with Carreon again for 30-yards, and an extra point put the score at 45-21.

With 11 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Bridges scored his second touchdown of the day from five-yards out, and Crowder made it a 52-21 game. After a long pass by Cota to Carreon, Cota hit Andrew Rodriguez for a 20-yard score, and an extra point put the score at 52-28. Bridges scored his third touchdown of the day on a four-yard run with four minutes left in the game, and Crowder put the Bulldogs up 59-28 to seal the win.

McCoy ran 21 times for 195 yards and a touchdown, and had a 60-yard run in the win. Bridges just missed the century mark with an eight carry, 99 yard performance with three touchdowns. Love was 1-for-1 for 20 yards passing with a touchdown to Hall, and also ran four times for 36 yards and a score. Kolb had two rushes for 74 yards and a touchdown. Crowder hit eight extra points and a field goal for 11 points.

The Bronchos were led by Cota going 24-for-44 for 231 yards, four touchdowns and two picks. Carreon had a solid day with 10 catches for 133 yards and three touchdowns. Rodriguez caught five passes for 77 yards and a score, and Warren also had five catches for 26 yards. Jorge Valdez had six carries for 58 yards rushing. Sebastian Castaneda had six carries for 29 yards. 

Midland has been dominant this season, outscoring opponents 359-159 during their eight game winning streak.
