The Midland Independent School District (MISD) is taking steps to improve security at its campuses and facilities. The efforts include installation of additional card readers and security cameras. In accordance with a new state mandate, MISD also plans to apply shatter-resistant film to all exterior entryway windows and glass doors.

MISD Emergency Management Coordinator Tim Allen emphasized the district's commitment to creating a safe learning environment. "We remain dedicated to providing a safe and secure learning environment for students and staff," Allen said in a press release. "The enhancements we've implemented, along with safety drills and other proactive measures, demonstrate our commitment to creating a safe space for students to learn and staff to work."

The district is updating its exterior door locks as required by the state, and conducting thorough safety audits twice annually. Additionally, MISD has modernized its phone system to recognize specific locations such as classrooms when an individual contacts 911. This improvement ensures a quicker response during emergencies.

MISD has also seen success in its efforts to enhance campus security. Background checks for campus visitors have yielded what the district describes as "outstanding compliance." School leaders have become proficient in using the Crisis Go Emergency App, which allows for swift communication and coordination during times of crisis.

MISD Chief of Police Scott McKown emphasized the importance of collaboration among district departments in implementing the security initiatives. "The police department, campus staff, and technology all play vital roles in enhancing our security measures and ensuring safety for all students," McKown said.
