McCoy scores 3 TDs and Midland rushes for 446 yards in 38-28 win over Frenship

Midland (7-0, 2-0) continued to dominate, piling on 446 rushing yards led by Stroman Bridges and Elijah McCoy in a 38-28 win over Frenship (5-2, 0-2) on Friday night.

McCoy started off the scoring with a 31-yard touchdown run, and an extra point by Levi Crowder put the Bulldogs up 7-0. Frenship responded with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Hudson Hutcheson to Leyton Stone, and an extra point by Drew Cox to tie the game. McCoy then struck again with a 10-yard rushing touchdown, and Crowder kicked it through the uprights to go up 14-7 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Crowder nailed a 24-yard field goal to make it a 17-7 game. Chase Campbell then caught a Hutcheson touchdown pass of 29-yards, and Cox’s kick made it a 17-14 game. Anthony Kolb provided some fireworks on offense for the Bulldogs on a 94-yard touchdown run, and Crowder’s kick put Midland up 24-14. Kolb took the toss on an option play and got to the end zone completely untouched. Jaden Tackett-Jewell brought the Tigers within three with a two-yard run, capped off by an extra point by Cox.

In the third quarter, Bridges ran the ball in from 48-yards out and Crowder’s kick put the Bulldogs up by 10. Bridges took a toss and found a big hole where he was able to scamper to the end zone for a big score. McCoy continued the scoring for Midland on a 44-yard run, and Crowder made it 38-21. He hit the hole up the gut and took off leaving defenders in his dust. Hutcheson scored on a nine-yard run in the fourth quarter, followed by a Cox kick, but Midland held on for the 10 point victory.

Bridges had nine carries for 209 yards and a touchdown to lead the rushing attack. He had a big run of 62-yards in the win. McCoy ran 17 times for 123 yards and three scores, while Kolb had a pair of rushing attempts for 114 yards and a touchdown. Crowder was a perfect 5-for-5 on PAT attempts and hit his only field goal attempt. Athen Dominguez had an interception to lead the defense, and as a team Midland picked off four passes and recovered a fumble.

Midland has now outscored opponents 300-131 and are on top of the 6A Region I District 2 standings in a tie with Odessa.
