The Ector County Independent School District (ECISD) has partnered with the University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) and Odessa College (OC) to create a Registered Apprenticeship Program for Teachers. This program, approved by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), aims to provide a fully funded opportunity for individuals interested in pursuing a career in teaching.
ECISD Superintendent Dr. Scott Muri expressed his excitement about this partnership, stating that it offers a unique opportunity for aspiring teachers. Through this program, teacher candidates will have their tuition and fees fully covered, gain hands-on experience in the classroom alongside highly qualified teachers, and even receive a paycheck while earning their degree. Muri also emphasized that this program allows individuals to graduate college without any debt.
UTPB President Dr. Sandra Woodley also expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the importance of supporting school districts by educating the next generation of teachers. She described this opportunity as a win-win for all parties involved, especially students.
Dr. Gregory Williams, President of OC, commended ECISD for taking the initiative to address the ongoing teacher shortages in the area. He stated that the Registered Apprenticeship Program provides a low or no-cost option for individuals who are passionate about pursuing a rewarding career in teaching.
The teacher apprenticeships, a collaboration between the DOL and the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), became available late last summer. This program aims to attract and retain talented individuals in the teaching profession by providing them with financial support and valuable hands-on experience.
