Midland Independent School District (MISD) has calculated this year’s enrollment numbers to have surpassed the 28,000 mark for the first time ever in the district’s history, a recent Your Basin report stated.
Aug. 23 marked the 11th day of the 2023-24 academic school year, and the first day all schools in the MISD were operating.
In total, the district enrolled 28,483 students, reflecting an increase of 1,054 and a 4% increase from the previous school year.
The data was collected by the Texas Education Agency, which compares the sum to October 2022’s figures, which was 27,843.
“The current enrollment could change from now and when the official snapshot is taken this October,” the report stated. “During this time, the district will work to locate students who were enrolled as of last school year but thus far have not returned to class.”
Campuses with the most year-to-year growth include both comprehensive high schools (MHS and LHS), both of which grew by more than 5% and by more than 100 students, as well as specialty high school campuses Coleman and Early College at Midland College.
Some of the campuses reflecting the higher growth averages are San Jacinto Junior High, which received more than 100 students, as well as Rusk, Fasken and Henderson Elementary Schools.
