The City of Midland identified the cause of the grass fires along Highway 80, according to a Your Basin report.
The cause was found to be sparks from a train, resulting in three separate fires spanning two miles on the south side of W. Highway 80. No injuries were reported during the incident.
At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 17, the Midland Fire Department responded to reports of a fire on the 7600 block of W. Highway 80, across from Cinergy Midland, causing temporary closures along Highway 80.
“Smoke from a grass fire is affecting visibility, and drivers are encouraged to avoid the area,” the report stated.
The closures were located in both directions at Loop 250 W. in front of Cinergy Midland, according to the report.
The highway has now been reopened on both southbound and northbound lanes of W. Highway 80, a follow-up release by the city said.
