Mayor Lori Blong announced the groundbreaking for Zoo Midland and The Preserve in west Midland on April 1, describing it as "an exciting new chapter for our city," according to a post on her Facebook page.
"Today's groundbreaking for Zoo Midland and The Preserve in west Midland marks an exciting new chapter for our city," said Blong. "This project has long been in the making—and is a long-term investment in education, conservation, and quality of place for Midland families."
The project is situated on the former Nueva Vista Golf Club and aims to offer a unique wildlife and nature experience in West Texas. It emphasizes education, conservation, and connection for future generations. "This project has long been in the making—and is a long-term investment in education, conservation, and quality of place for Midland families," Blong said.
According to the mayor, the zoo will be funded through a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, ensuring that no taxpayer money will be used. Blong said that it will be the first zoo in the United States built from scratch in the last 25 years.
Adjacent to Zoo Midland will be The Preserve, which will cover more than 178 acres. This area will include dining, retail, entertainment options, and public green spaces. More than 40% of the land is designated for parks and open areas designed to accommodate families.
Blong expressed pride in those contributing to the project's realization. "I am grateful for the vision, the planning, and the diligent work of the individuals who have brought these two projects to this moment," she said.
