Midland College President Dr. Steve Thomas officially retired this past week following a 15-year tenure, NewsWest9 reported.
“During my time at Midland College, I have had the privilege and pleasure of working with an experienced and professional Board of Trustees,” Thomas said in a press release. “I also work with an outstanding team of faculty, administrators and staff. I leave knowing that Midland College will be in good hands. I have no doubt that the next president will carry on the great traditions and commitment to excellence expected by our students and the community.”
The former president’s contributions to the college were celebrated during a farewell celebration in the Chap Center Aug. 3.
Thomas began working at Midland College in 2008, becoming the school’s fourth president. During his time with the college, he led various developments, such as the Early College High School, the M.C/MISD College and career academies and a Pre-K Academy. He also oversaw various campus renovation projects.
"Continued growth and prosperity have a lot of programs that are going to be new in the future,'' Thomas said. “We're going to be focusing on workforce education. I think we have a big role to play there in the future for the Permian Basin so I think the future is very bright for Midland College."
Thomas began garnering knowledge and experience related to community colleges in 1976, during which he taught psychology courses as an adjunct instructor.
“I was lucky to find a career path that has been so enjoyable and rewarding, but after 47 years in the profession, it is time for a new chapter in my life,” Thomas said. “Our daughter Lindsay was born here, and my wife Vicki and I will always cherish our time in Midland. I want to thank both the Midland community and the community of Fort Stockton, where our branch campus is located. I know of no other community college that enjoys such phenomenal support.”
