Powers dominates for Andrews High swim team

It was a golden weekend for the Andrews boys' and girls' swimming teams, which took home a bucket full of gold medals during the District 4-5A Swimming and Diving Championships.

Darin Powers won four gold medals for the boys while Rebecca Robertson and Grace Shaffer also collected two gold medals each for the girls, according to the Midland Reporter-Telegram.

Powers, standing 5-foot-9 and weighing 160 pounds, was a dominant force. He won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 8.98 seconds, and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.58) in individual competition. He was also part of the gold medal 200 medley relay team and the 400 freestyle relay teams.

Robertson captured the 200 freestyle (1:59.49) and 100 freestyle (55.30). Shaffer finished first in the 200 IM (2:25.60) and 100 butterfly. Shaffer and Robertson were also part of the gold medal-winning 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Meanwhile, Greenwood senior and Virginia Tech signee Grace Austin took home gold in the girls 1-meter diving (388.60 points). Her teammate Kaitlin Geric of Greenwood finished second in the girls 100 butterfly (1:07.61).

The top six finishers in each event qualified for the Region I-5A meet set for Feb. 3-5 at Pete Ragus Aquatic Center in Lubbock.
