Mayor Blong on rejected bond proposal by Midland Fire’s pension review board: 'Curtailing city services to fill a void left by poor financial management should not be on the table'

Following the Midland Firemen’s Relief and Retirement Fund board voting down the City's proposed eight-figure bond agreement that, along with cuts to firefighter’s benefits aimed to bring the $109 million pension deficit into the clear, Mayor Lori Blong is responding to the fund chairman's rationale behind the decision.

After the Midland City Council unanimously authorized an eight-figure bond agreement that, along with cuts to firefighter's benefits, aimed to bring the $109 million pension deficit into the clear, the Midland Firemen’s Relief and Retirement Fund board (MFRRF) voted down the measure.

The Midland Firemen’s Relief & Retirement Fund (MFRRF) is currently listed as a non-compliant benefit plan on the Texas Pension Review Board's website due to incomplete financial reporting for Fiscal Year 2022, spokespeople for the PRB, City of Midland, and MFRRF all confirmed with Midland Times.
