The Midland Independent School District (MISD) Board of Trustees discussed a report on The System of Great Schools (SGS) during its Monday meeting.

According to a news release from the district, SGS is a statewide initiative led by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) that aims to enhance student achievement by providing more high-quality education options. MISD joined SGS during the 2023-24 school year and initiated the North Star program with the goal of having 70 percent of students attend an A or B-rated campus by 2028.

The initiative includes strategic planning to transform underperforming schools or create new, high-performing ones. The news release said that SGS uses a quality seat analysis to promote educational options for students, particularly in marginalized areas. Additionally, the goal is to expand the district’s A/B schools by enhancing existing campuses or ceasing operations at failing ones.

After completing a quality seat analysis, Bunche and De Zavala elementaries were identified as campuses to participate in the program. De Zavala will follow the STEM pathway, while Bunche will follow the College and Career pathway. The board is next scheduled to meet on April 15.
