An outbreak of the canine distemper virus (CDV) at the Kermit Animal Shelter has prompted Midland Animal Services to urge pet owners to ensure their dogs are current on vaccinations.

Canine distemper is a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease that affects dogs' respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. Symptoms can include nasal discharge, coughing, lethargy, and neurological signs.

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) advises a vaccination schedule for both puppies and adult dogs as the most effective defense against distemper. For puppies aged 6-16 weeks, it recommends administering at least three doses of the combination vaccine (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus) every 2-4 weeks starting between 6 and 8 weeks of age. Adult dogs older than 16 weeks should receive two doses of the combination vaccine spaced 2-4 weeks apart, followed by a booster within one year and subsequent boosters every three years.

Midland Animal Services is taking several steps to protect community pets:

1. **Vaccination Clinics**: Pet owners are encouraged to visit local veterinarians to keep vaccinations up-to-date. Fix West Texas offers low-cost drive-thru vaccination services from March 5-7, 14-19, and 24-30 between 10 a.m. and noon.

2. **Public Education**: Educational materials are being distributed to raise awareness about vaccination importance and help pet owners recognize early signs of distemper.

3. **Shelter Protocols**: Biosecurity measures within facilities are being enhanced to minimize outbreak risks.

Pet owners are strongly encouraged to review vaccination records ensuring pets are current on all vaccinations with emphasis on the distemper vaccine. They should limit exposure by avoiding contact with unvaccinated or unknown-status dogs in communal settings and monitor their pets’ health closely for symptoms like nasal discharge or coughing. If concerns arise, consulting a veterinarian promptly is advised.

Midland Animal Services is committed to promoting animal welfare and public health through education, enforcement, and community partnerships with the mission of ensuring safety for both animals and residents in Midland.
