Midland High School has recognized the contributions of Black community members in Midland by creating a historical timeline of significant milestones.
According to a Facebook post by the Midland Independent School District (MISD), the school's Black Student Union and student library aides collaborated on this project in honor of Black History Month. "MHS Librarian, Ms. Reese, worked with the Midland Historic Museum to verify dates, names, and events," the district wrote. The initiative is part of the Texas Education Agency's commitment to teaching about the achievements, perspectives, and experiences of Black Americans throughout American history.
According to History.com, Black History Month has been celebrated since 1976. The annual celebration highlights achievements by African Americans within the context of American history, an initiative originally put together by historian Carter G. Woodson and other leading African Americans.
President Donald Trump signed a proclamation designating February as Black History Month at the end of January. "Throughout our history, black Americans have been among our country’s most consequential leaders, shaping the cultural and political destiny of our Nation in profound ways," he wrote.
