VisitMidland and the Midland Chamber have announced that the city will host the 18th Annual International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) from June 9 to 14.

A February 14 Facebook post shared by VisitMidland described the IREC as "the world’s largest international collegiate rocket engineering competition." The event is expected to draw more than 2,000 students, faculty, and mentors.

According to VisitMidland, the IREC is forecasted to generate up to $7 million for the local economy, creating up to 9,600 room nights over nine days. "The competition will also provide exposure to Midland on a global stage, showcasing the region’s commitment to innovation and high-tech development in the aerospace industry," VisitMidland said in its post.

The Bush Convention Center announced on its Facebook page that it will host the IREC's closing awards ceremony. "We’re thrilled to help bring this incredible event to Midland," the venue said in a February 19 post announcing its selection. "We can’t wait to celebrate the achievements of these brilliant engineers!"
