The City of Midland has announced the opening of four "cold weather warming centers" in anticipation of an upcoming cold weather front. This initiative aims to provide citizens with a safe and warm environment during this period.
A Facebook post dated February 18 from the city indicated that these centers will be available for those in need. The facilities include Breaking Bread Kitchen at 410 E. Florida Ave., Salvation Army of Midland at 600 E. Wall St., Midland Soup Kitchen Ministry at 1401 Orchard Ln., and the City of Midland Parks and Recreation.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), much of the Permian Basin is currently under an extreme cold warning, with dangerously low temperatures expected through the morning of February 20. The forecast for Midland includes wind chills ranging from -5 degrees to 0.
Midland Times reported that the last time the city made warming centers available was earlier last month.
