Mayor Lori Blong said that the ExxonMobil Soccer Complex at Beal Park "is a big win for our community." The mayor participated with Midland officials in the groundbreaking ceremony for the facility on February 12.
"This project is a big win for our community, expanding recreational opportunities and boosting local sports tourism," said Blong, according to Facebook. "So excited to see this vision come to life."
According to reports, the complex will feature 62 fields, a splash park, and additional amenities. It is expected to become a central hub for Midland soccer games and future tournaments.
In an earlier Facebook post, Blong mentioned that the project aims to make Midland "a great place to live, work, and play."
"Whether you enjoy Beal Park for its open spaces, sports fields, or just a place to unwind, these improvements will make it even better for families and visitors," she said.
The Midland Times reported that the budget for this transformation is $44.5 million. Funding includes $28 million from the City of Midland, $10 million from the Beal Foundation, $5 million from the Scharbauer Foundation specifically for developing the splash park, and $1.5 million contributed by ExxonMobil.
Blong is a native of Midland who owns a small business and has previously served on the Midland City Council. She made history in November 2022 when she defeated former mayor Jimmy Morales in a three-way race, becoming Midland's first female mayor.
