The Midland Independent School District’s (MISD) Pre-Kindergarten Department is distributing free books on the Student Services floor of the administration building, as announced in a Facebook post.
MISD said that the book display aims to ensure every visitor has access to the joy of reading. The Permian Basin public school district expressed gratitude to the Literacy Coalition of the Permian Basin for assisting in replenishing books for families, according to the post.
According to MISD, at the beginning of the 2024-2025 academic year, only 7% of its Pre-K students were meeting end-of-year targets for phonological awareness skills. These skills include letter sound knowledge, letter naming, syllabication, onset-rime, rhyming, and alliteration.
The district reported that this figure increased to 56% by the conclusion of the fall semester. "This increase in literacy rates supports our strategic plan to have pre-k students proficient on phonological awareness and kindergarten readiness," MISD said in the post.
