The installation of a $1.9 million synthetic track turf at Midland Freshman High School is underway, as reported in a filing with a state regulatory agency.

According to a January 8 filing, Cortney Smith, chief of facilities and operations for Midland Independent School District (ISD), is leading the project. The work includes the installation of a four-lane running track and the addition of lighting, a scoreboard, bleachers, and tennis courts to the existing turf field at the campus. The total area for the project is 80,000 square feet.

The school is located at 101 E Gist Ave., and the working title for the project is "Midland Freshman HS 4 Lane Synthetic Running Track & Tennis Courts," according to the filing. Work on the project was expected to begin on December 9 and conclude by February 28.

During the Midland ISD Board of Trustees' December meeting, it was revealed that the track installation at the school was finished. However, district officials were still waiting for an electrical contractor to complete the wiring of lights.
