The Midland Police Department (MPD) has joined other law enforcement agencies in mourning the loss of Officer Cooper Dawson from the Greenville Police Department (GPD). Officer Dawson was killed in the line of duty on November 25.

In a Facebook post dated November 26, MPD said that it stands with Greenville police as it honors Dawson’s service and legacy.

According to GPD, Dawson was conducting a traffic stop which led to a foot pursuit of the alleged suspect. During this pursuit, Dawson was ambushed and shot multiple times.

The officer returned fire and struck the suspect despite sustaining what GPD described as critical injuries. He was then transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Dawson’s death marks the first line-of-duty death for GPD in more than 100 years.
