Midland, Texas, ranked second in the United States for per capita personal income among metropolitan areas in 2023. This information was released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) on November 14, 2024.
Midland's per capita personal income stood at $143,469, trailing only San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California, which recorded $148,036. The rest of the top five included Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Connecticut ($139,006), Naples-Marco Island, Florida ($134,527), and San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley, California ($130,730).
The average per capita personal income across the U.S. was reported to be $69,810.
San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara surpassed Midland to take the top spot this year. Midland had been ranked first in 2022 but experienced a decline of 0.6% in per capita personal income for 2023. This decrease followed a significant increase of 20.9% in 2022 when Midland's income reached $144,469. The drop represented the largest decline among the 384 metropolitan areas assessed by BEA.
Overall, the Bureau of Economic Analysis noted an average increase of 5.4% in per capita personal income across all U.S. metropolitan areas for the year.
In Texas rankings that include national standings: Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown was ranked at number 25 with an income of $80,471; Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington was placed at number 48 with $74,165; and Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land came in at number 54 with $72,453.
Further down were San Angelo (ranked 102nd nationally) with $65,650; Amarillo (167th) with $60,182; Odessa (188th) with $58,961; Abilene (239th) with $56,034; Lubbock (257th) with $54,524; and El Paso (365th) reporting an income of $46,732.
