A proposed $2.8 million project for Zoo Midland began construction on Nov. 13, according to a filing with a state regulatory agency. The new site, located at 1507 Todd Drive, will serve as a storage facility and offsite area for the zoo.

The 4,795-square-foot project, 15 minutes from the zoo, will encompass two buildings and include site improvements. The title for the project is Zoo Midland - Offsite, and construction is expected to be completed by May 16, 2025.

According to the filing submitted on Oct. 31, Jason Green, Director of Zoo Midland, is leading the project. WDM Architects P.A. based in Wichita, Kansas, is responsible for the new design of the buildings.

The Planning and Zoning Commission approved the final plat for the approximately 4-acre site in October.

"As a city develops, people look for those cultural aspects to become a part of, and this zoological facility will be one of those enriching experiences beyond the basic necessities of life," Green told the Midland Times earlier this year in a profile story.
