Monday marks National First Responders Day across the United States, with the city of Midland participating in the nationwide observance.

According to a Facebook post dated October 28, the city expressed its appreciation for the Midland Police Department (MPD) and the Midland Fire Department (MFD). Both departments were commended for their courage, dedication, service, and commitment to safety every day.

President Joe Biden issued an official White House proclamation for National First Responders Day this year. The proclamation celebrates "the countless men and women who risk their lives to keep their communities safe."

Citing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the National Day Calendar website states there are a little more than four million career and volunteer first responders in the country. Ninety-seven firefighters and 155 police officers die in the line of duty every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). National First Responders Day has been observed since 2019.
