A counselor from General Franks Elementary School recognized a district police officer who visited the school in honor of Red Ribbon Week.
Red Ribbon Week, as highlighted by RedRibbon.org, emphasizes the importance of living a drug-free life. It serves as an opportunity for parents, educators, and communities to reinforce drug-free messages shared with children throughout the year. During this week, youth across the country pledge to increase their knowledge about the destructive effects of drug abuse, including prescription drug misuse, and renew their commitment to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
According to Counselor Samantha Celaya, when Midland Independent School District (ISD) Police Officer Fuentez visited the school this week, she took notice. "In case you missed it, this week is Red Ribbon Week! Students are learning to keep their bodies safe and healthy. Thank you to Officer Fuentez for visiting our first graders today – she brought special Midland ISD Police Department ribbons just for them. #WeAreMISD," she wrote in a social media story. The Midland ISD Police Department also expressed appreciation on Facebook: "We love positive feedback! #WeAreMISD #RedRibbonWeek."

Red Ribbon Week began as a response to honor Enrique (Kiki) Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Administration agent who was tortured and killed in Mexico in 1985. According to RedRibbon.org, National Family Partnership supported the first National Red Ribbon Celebration in 1988, which included red badges of satin that Camarena's loved ones displayed to honor his battle against illegal drugs.
