Midland Independent School District (MISD) recently used Facebook to remind drivers of the importance of slowing down and being vigilant around school buses, in recognition of National School Bus Safety Week.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), 11 people were killed and 63 seriously injured in 2,523 crashes involving school buses in the state last year. Speed and distracted driving were identified as major contributing factors. TxDOT emphasizes that everyone, including motorists and school bus drivers, plays a role in ensuring student safety around school buses.
"It is National School Bus Safety Week. This is a great time to review safety tips with your children," wrote MISD. "Tips for students: Stand as far back from the curb as possible when you are waiting for the bus. Wait until the bus has come to a complete stop and watch for the driver to signal it is safe to board. Listen to the driver and remain seated to avoid distracting the driver. When exiting the bus, cross only in front, never behind. Make eye contact with the driver and wait for them to signal that it is safe to cross the street."

Drivers can receive a fine of up to $1,250 for a first offense if they do not stop for flashing red lights or a stop sign on a school bus, regardless of which direction they are headed, according to TxDOT. This rule does not apply when the bus is on the opposite roadway of a divided highway. A bus signals to drivers that it is permissible to move when its flashing lights stop or when the bus driver signals it is okay to pass.
