Participants at the Midland College Phi Theta Kappa First Generation Resource Fair shared their experiences, providing insights on navigating college life and overcoming challenges. Attendees learned about MC’s educational programs, engaged with the community, and enjoyed complimentary meals.
During a panel discussion, several MC faculty and staff who were first-generation college students offered advice. "The first piece of advice that I’m going to give you as a first-generation graduate speaking to first-generation students is this: If you want to take advantage of an opportunity, you have to go and get it," said MC Vice President of Student Services Joseph Granado. Cody Vasquez, MC Director of Academic Engagement, added, "Focus on communication and building your confidence. Once you have the confidence that you can do absolutely anything, everything else just sort of falls into place."
Students also had the chance to voice their experiences and concerns. Eriana Loya, MC’s Phi Theta Kappa President, remarked on the event's impact: "It was a very eye-opening and motivational experience for me, and I hope the rest of the students here feel the same way."
This event follows Midland College's selection as a member of the 2024-2025 cohort of the FirstGen Forward Network.
