A retired NASA astronaut is set to speak at Midland College as part of the school’s Davidson Distinguished Lecture Series. The objective of the speaker series is to bring influential speakers from diverse fields to inspire and educate the community.

According to a Midland College news release, the Marian Blakemore Planetarium recently held a screening of a film focused on the life of José Hernández, whose story is profiled in "A Million Miles Away." The movie focuses on pursuing dreams and highlights the power of resiliency, which struck a chord among those who watched it.

"We are thrilled with the turnout for the screening and the positive feedback from attendees," said Rebecca Bell, Midland College’s Executive Director of Institutional Advancement. "The film beautifully captures José Hernández’s journey, and we are excited to hear directly from him during our upcoming Davidson Distinguished Lecture Series."

Those interested in attending Hernández's oration can go to the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center on the Midland College campus on Sept. 12, according to the news release. Among the topics that Hernández is expected to address are being steadfast in his goal to become an astronaut and the role that those near and dear to him played in his educational pursuits.

"We hope José Hernández’s lecture will motivate our students and community to pursue their passions and never give up, no matter the obstacles they may face," added Jaime Águila, Midland College Director of Community & Family Engagement. "His message aligns perfectly with the mission of Midland College to provide educational opportunities that change lives."
