The Palette Club in Midland, Texas, is preparing to host an exciting mural demonstration led by local artist Jerry Collazo, Jr., known for his vibrant street art throughout the city.
The event, scheduled for Sept. 10 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., is expected to attract a diverse audience interested in learning more about mural art while participating in the creation of a new mural on the Palette Club’s storage shed.
“Our organization has roots going back to the late 1920s, starting with a small group of women who simply wanted to paint together,” said Dee Kemp, board member and past president of the Palette Club. “What began in garages has evolved into a thriving community hub for artists of all ages, dedicated to promoting the arts.”

The Palette Club’s current location, which includes a gallery, kitchen, and studio, was secured through the forward-thinking leadership that has kept the club active for decades. “Our commitment to our mission is reflected in our monthly demonstrations,” Kemp said. “This time, we decided to highlight street art to bring a modern touch to our programming.”
Collazo’s demonstration will cover the complexities of mural creation and actively involve the community in the painting process.
“Murals aren’t just about painting anything on a wall,” Kemp said. “There’s a significant amount of preparation before the actual painting begins. Jerry will guide us through the process, and then our members, along with anyone interested, will help bring the mural to life.”
The Palette Club, recognized for its wide range of activities, also offers evening mini-workshops and more extensive multi-day workshops with nationally acclaimed artists.
Kemp noted that the workshops often reach full capacity quickly. She also highlighted the ArtReach project, which brings art to those unable to visit the club, including locations like the YMCA, Manor Park, and the Aphasia Center.
In addition to workshops and demonstrations, the Palette Club supports local artists through biannual shows and sales, allowing members to showcase and sell their work.
“Art keeps our older members vibrant and engaged,” Kemp said, highlighting the club’s broad age range of participants, from their 20s to their 80s.
The Palette Club's commitment to the community extends to a registered “Little Library” and a mini art gallery, offering art books, supplies, and mini artworks for public use. Kemp emphasized their passion for the arts and the importance of encouraging more people to engage with and appreciate art.
With the upcoming mural demonstration, the Palette Club continues to fulfill its mission of bringing art to the heart of Midland, fostering creativity and community involvement with every brushstroke.
