Midland College has joined a national initiative that highlights schools providing first-generation college students with the tools to succeed. As a member of the 2024-2025 cohort of the FirstGen Forward Network, the institution is now recognized for its ability to cultivate programs catering to students of all demographics.
According to a news release, Midland College has helped first-generation students by offering mentorship programs, establishing student clubs designed to address their unique challenges, and promoting efforts to enroll these students. The school now hopes to expand on these efforts with help from the FirstGen Forward Network.
"Engagement with the FirstGen Forward Network is an opportunity for Midland College to learn from other colleges as they explore and implement innovative strategies to better serve students," said Midland College President Dr. Damon Kennedy. "We’re excited for the work ahead."
The Center for First-generation Student Success backs the FirstGen Forward Network and its endeavors to provide resources to first-generation students by providing colleges with information on how to help this demographic succeed, according to the news release. The organization will also provide Midland College with professional development opportunities and a network of other collegiate institutions that aid first-generation students.
"Being selected for the FirstGen Forward Network is a significant honor for Midland College," said Joseph Granado, Vice President of Student Services. "This recognition underscores our ongoing commitment to ensuring that first-generation students have the resources, support, and opportunities they need to succeed in their academic pursuits and beyond."
