The Midland Police Department (MPD) is urging both pedestrians and motorists to be vigilant and mindful of their surroundings on the Tall City's streets.
In a July 18 Facebook post, MPD called on the public to work with it to make the roadways safer for pedestrians and drivers.
According to the post, the police department stresses everyone to stay alert, follow traffic signals, and look out for each other.
Also included in the post is a video that lists five rules for crossing the street safely.
These rules are: pedestrians must use crosswalks and intersections when crossing public streets as dictated by law, look both ways before crossing the road, wait for traffic to clear before crossing the road, hold hands with young children if they are accompanying them, and avoid stepping out in front of vehicles despite having the right of way.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 7,520 pedestrians were killed and over 67,000 pedestrians were injured in accidents nationwide in 2022.
During the same year, a pedestrian lost his or her life every 70 minutes in traffic crashes.
