The City of Midland has announced that nearly 130 dogs have survived a distemper outbreak and have been declared symptom-free following a mass fostering effort. The initiative, conducted at the Midland Animal Shelter at the end of April, was a collaborative effort involving Fix West Texas, Midland Animal Services, Sassys Dog Rescue, and Midland Animal Shelter Adoptables.

Fix West Texas reported on the outcomes of the fostering effort after this spring's distemper outbreak. "All of the 129 dogs who survived distemper are now fully cleared and symptom-free," stated Fix West Texas.

The mass foster initiative aimed to prevent the euthanasia of approximately 150 dogs. According to Fix West Texas, there was no spread of distemper within the community or foster homes during this period.

"93 percent of the dogs rescued were able to survive this terrible disease because they were vaccinated by our City on intake," noted Fix West Texas in its report.
