Several Midland Independent School District (MISD) educators are using the summer to hone their skills as teachers and leaders. A number of elementary schools are providing summer programs that allow teachers to expand their repertoire.

According to a Midland ISD news release, four of these programs are being led by assistant principals as they prepare to advance as campus leaders. Among them is Scharbauer Elementary Assistant Principal Griselda Rosales, who is spending her summer serving as the principal during the summer learning program at Bush Elementary. Rosales has spent the last four years honing her leadership skills through the district’s mentorship program and now mentors other teachers through opportunity culture as a multi-classroom leader.

"I am excited about the opportunity to be a campus principal for summer learning," Rosales said. "It is my first opportunity to lead a campus and oversee all campus operations, including programming, coaching, hiring and leading all staff, and students."

According to a district news release, former Bonham principal Tricia Teran first took Rosales under her wing. This mentorship continued last year under Scharbauer Elementary Principal Sally Smith when Rosales secured a position as an assistant principal. Smith was instrumental in furthering Rosales's development.

Rosales was named MISD's Assistant Principal of the Year for the 2023-24 school year and plans to participate in the MISD Aspiring Principals Academy in the fall, a program that trains assistant principals for future campus leadership responsibilities.
